NAC Insurance in conjunction with NZI recently hosted over 60 brokers and guests at the Rally of New Zealand at Mystery Creek near Hamilton. With the weather behaving itself, a large spectator crowd gathered to watch Marcus Gronholm and Sebastian Loeb battle through some of the worlds best rally roads and finish with the closest margin ever.

Gronholm withstood a final frantic charge to edge current world champion Sebastien Loeb (France) by just 3/10ths of a second to claim his fifth victory in New Zealand.

Loeb pushed to the limit in the final super special but after 353km of special stages he ran out of real estate with just 3/10ths of a second separating him from glory.


Northland's promising rally driver Kirsty Nelson enjoyed a great result last weekend at the Rally of Wairarapa where she finished in ninth place overall and seventh in class. A fairly uneventful rally reaped its reward however with a high placing for the NZRC rookie in this the third round of the national championship.

The result from the Rally of Wairarapa is quite a contrast after the disappointment of a DNF at the Rally of Whangarei due to an under bonnet fire at the end of the first stage on Sunday.

A power-steering fluid leak which ignited on the turbo caused the fire which destoyed all that was able to burn or melt in the engine bay. Nelson only noticed there was a problem when she was unable to change gears after the clutch system had failed and smoke then appeared from under the car after pulling to the side of the road.
